A Barthes Reader (New York: Hill and Wang, 1983)

A Barthes Reader, edited by Susan Sontag, collects almost all important early essays of Roland Barthes, ranging from his insightful reading of myth in Mythologies, to his reflection on the playfulness of language in Writing Degree Zero and The Pleasure of the Text, and to his rhetorical examination of the photographic message. A Barthes Reader will help us understand the ways in which Barthes contributes to (post)structuralist semiotics by re-shaping the concept of language and of image.

The Responsibility of Forms: Critical Essays on Music, Art, and Representation (Berkeley and Los Angeles: U of California P, 1991)

The Responsibility of Forms, a collection of Barthes’s late essays, demonstrates the wide gamut of Barthes’s analytical curiosity: Barthes is concerned with the materiality of the sign not merely in verbal arts but in visual and musical arts. In these essays, we can see that Barthes seeks to blur the boundaries between various kinds of arts and explicate the common value of them, or as Terry Eagleton cogently puts it, “to install himself at the very juncture of sign and body, semiotic and somatic, meaning and materiality.”
